From Ruins to Retail: Awka’s Landmark Ikenga Mall Officially Opens for Business

AWKA – A new era of commercial activity has dawned in the Anambra State capital as the long-anticipated Ikenga Mall officially opened its doors to the public on Wednesday.
Located at the strategic Agu-Awka Industrial layout along Zik Avenue (Old Awka-Enugu Road), the mall opening marks the fulfillment of a long-standing developmental promise to the residents of the state.
The site of the new mall holds deep historical significance. It was formerly home to the Ikenga Hotel, a state-owned landmark that was razed and vandalized during the political unrest that ensued between the then Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige and his estranged political godfather Chief Chris Uba.
The journey to rebuild the site began in 2013 under the administration of Mr. Peter Obi. However, after the project stalled during the eight-year tenure of Chief Willie Obiano. The incumbent Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, made the completion of the mall a priority of his administration’s urban renewal agenda.
The atmosphere at the mall on opening day was one of excitement. Shoppers and early visitors expressed a sense of pride in the city’s new aesthetic and economic boost.
Engr. Kene Umeadi, one of the first visitors to tour the facility, shared his enthusiasm on social media:
“Today got me like this. Anambra is truly on the rise. Ikenga Mall Awka is finally up and running due to the vision of Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo. Compliments of the season, everyone”.

The mall is already buzzing with activity, anchored by several premium retail brands that have commenced full operations:

Kilimanjaro: Offering a flagship quick-service restaurant for food enthusiasts.
Medplus Pharmacy: Ensuring quality healthcare and beauty products are accessible to residents. Among others.
