Don’t Stifle Opposition, You Are a Primary Beneficiary of Democracy — ADC’s Nwobu Tells Tinubu

AWKA, ANAMBRA – The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2025 Anambra election, Dr. Geoffrey Ndubisi Nwobu, has warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces a “grave historical irony” if the current administration continues to stifle opposition voices.
In a statement released on Monday following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s return from a 20-day working leave, Dr. Nwobu, a veteran political leader and former State Chairman of both the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), urged the President to protect the nation’s democratic space from state-sponsored interference.
Welcoming the President back to the country, Dr. Nwobu noted that the return comes at a time of “significant national anxiety.”
“It is our hope that Mr. President is now fully refreshed and ready to settle down to the urgent task of addressing the critical issues bedeviling our society—most notably the mounting economic pressures and the security challenges facing our people,” the statement read.
Drawing a direct parallel to the President’s history as a pro-democracy activist, Dr. Nwobu reminded the Commander-in-Chief that he is a primary beneficiary of the same political freedom he now oversees. “Mr. President, your bold and dogged role through the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) is a chapter that can never be rewritten. Furthermore, the democratic space you occupied as a lone progressive voice in the Southwest was only possible because the government of that era allowed the opposition enough latitude to flourish.”
The ADC chieftain expressed deep concern over current trends suggesting the intimidation of opposition leaders and the orchestration of internal crises within rival parties. He warned: “It would be a grave historical irony if, under your watch, the opposition is now stifled. As a veteran of the trenches, much more is expected of you. A flourishing opposition is not a threat to your government; it is the heartbeat of a healthy democracy.”
Nwobu concluded by calling on the President to ensure that the Nigerian democratic space remains competitive, fair, and free from interference, urging a focus on governance over partisan suppression.
