AWKA – Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week, following continued compliance with the “Monday sit-at-home” order.
The Governor, in a sternly worded statement issued on Monday in viral video posted on his verified Facebook @Charles Chukwuma Soludo account, described the observance of the illegal order as a “protracted economic sabotage” that the state government will no longer tolerate.
Governor Soludo emphasized that the closure of the iconic Onitsha market serves as a final warning to all commercial hubs in the state. He declared that henceforth, any market in Anambra that fails to open for business on Mondays will face an automatic one-week shutdown.
“This action is not taken lightly,” the Governor stated. “I am determined to protect the economic interests of our state and its people. No individual or group has the right to halt the lives and livelihood of the people.”
While urging traders and market stakeholders to disregard the sit-at-home calls, Soludo lamented the impact of the weekly lockdowns on the state’s status as a commercial nerve center. He called on residents to reclaim their mandate for a prosperous Anambra.
“To those who continue to aid and abet this economic sabotage, I warn that we will not tolerate it any further. Our government will take all necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of lives and property in the state,” the Governor warned.
The Governor assured the public that the state’s security apparatus is on high alert to protect those who defy the illegal orders. He encouraged residents to go about their normal business activities without fear, reiterating his administration’s commitment to ensuring Anambra remains a safe hub for business and investment.
