Tributes As International Religious Freedom Awardee, Imam Abdullahi, Transitions At 87

ABUJA — The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who transitioned on January 15.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Mission described the late cleric as a “fearless advocate” whose life was defined by a tireless commitment to religious tolerance and interfaith harmony.
Imam Abdullahi gained global acclaim for his extraordinary act of bravery in June 2018. During a period of intense communal crisis in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, the Imam risked his own life to provide refuge for over 200 Christians fleeing from attackers, hiding them in his home and mosque.
The U.S. Department of State subsequently honored this heroic feat by conferring upon him the prestigious 2019 International Religious Freedom Award.
“His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony,” the Mission stated, adding that his “legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike.”
The passing of the octogenarian cleric has been met with a wave of tributes from across the federation, with many describing him as a rare bridge-builder in a time of sensitive religious tensions.
